Research Interests

The Pu lab’s unique approach to dissecting cellular metabolism involves the study of lysosomes, the subcellular organelles that carry out a variety of functions that are essential for the normal workings of the cell, such as the conversion and trafficking of nutrients, metabolic signaling, and autophagy. Most of these functions rely on lysosome dynamics; namely, the ability of lysosomes to move, their distribution within the cell, and their ability to contact other organelles. The Pu lab employs cutting edge techniques like large-scale “-omics”, genomic editing, and live cell imaging to elucidate the complex molecular machinery that regulates lysosome dynamics, and examines how these mechanisms influence cellular metabolism as well as human disease.

Metabolic reprogramming of cancerous cells confers adaptation to nutrient poor environments, helping to fulfill the energetic and material demands of cell proliferation. This process has important implications in many different disease states, including cancer and metabolic disorders. As a member of Autophagy, Inflammation, and Metabolism (AIM) Center, Dr. Pu is interested in using the expertise and resources of the AIM Center to tease apart the molecular pathways that involve errors in human metabolism which can lead to disease states including the development of various cancers.

In addition to her scientific pursuits Dr. Pu is an enthusiastic mentor and has extensive hands-on experience in training upcoming cell and molecular biologists.
